Should You Wait for the Fathom or Buy a Maverick Now?

Waiting makes sense if…

You want to stop buying gas entirely, you can charge at home, and your current vehicle comfortably lasts into late 2027. Just know that range, towing and bed size are still unannounced, so you are committing to a truck whose key numbers you haven’t seen.

A Maverick makes sense if…

You need a truck this year, you tow up to 4,000 lbs (with the 4K Tow Package), or you don’t have reliable home charging. The hybrid Maverick already returns an EPA-estimated 42 mpg city (FWD). Our guide to Ford hybrid vehicles covers how the hybrid system works.

How the Fathom Is Built Differently

The Fathom is the first vehicle off a production system Ford designed from scratch, and the changes explain how it reaches its price. According to Ford’s update from Louisville Assembly Plant:

An “assembly tree”

Instead of one long line, the front section, rear section and battery are built on three parallel sub-assembly lines and joined only once most parts are already installed.

Fewer, larger parts

Large single-piece aluminum castings replace dozens of stamped and welded pieces, and the battery pack forms the vehicle’s floor.

Less wiring

Ford says the Fathom’s wiring harness is more than 4,000 feet shorter and 22 pounds lighter than a conventional layout.

Faster to assemble

Ford expects to build the Fathom 40% faster than the vehicles Louisville produces today.

What an LFP Battery Means for Long Island Owners

Ford says the Fathom’s battery cells are lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic cells built at BlueOval Battery Park Michigan. LFP is a different chemistry from the nickel-based cells in many earlier EVs, and it changes a few ownership habits:

  • Charging to 100% is usually fine. LFP cells are generally built to tolerate regular charges to 100%, where nickel-based packs are usually kept lower for daily use. Follow Ford’s own guidance once the owner’s manual is published.
  • Cold weather matters. All EV batteries lose some range and charge more slowly in the cold, and LFP chemistry is known to be more sensitive to it. Plan on shorter winter range on Long Island, and preconditioning while plugged in helps.
  • Home charging is the easy part. Most EV owners do the bulk of their charging overnight at home on a 240-volt Level 2 charger. If you don’t have a driveway or garage outlet, factor that in before you reserve.

The Road to Pre-Orders

  1. 2025: Ford announces a roughly $5 billion investment in Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park Michigan to build an affordable midsize electric pickup on a new Universal EV Platform, with LFP battery cells made in Michigan (Ford).
  2. 2026: Ford names the truck Fathom and sets the $28,350 starting MSRP. Louisville Assembly Plant is rebuilt around a new “assembly tree” process (Ford).
  3. Early 2027: Pre-orders open, and production-qualified builds begin at Louisville.
  4. Later in 2027: Customer vehicles arrive.

The dates beyond 2026 are Ford’s stated targets, not guarantees. If they move, this page will too.
