Riverhead Ford on Old Country Road in Riverhead sells plow-ready Ford Super Duty F-250 and F-350 trucks, listed with its commercial inventory on the Riverhead Ford work truck site. A plow truck is more than a 4x4 with a blade bolted on: it needs a front axle rated for the plow’s weight, an electrical system that can run the lights and hydraulics, and a 4x4 system built for low-speed pushing.
Ford lists a Snow Plow Prep Package on the 2026 F-250 Super Duty order sheet for exactly this job. Tell the commercial team which plow you run so they can point you to trucks rated to carry it.
What Makes a Ford Super Duty Plow-Ready
Four parts of the truck decide whether it can push snow all winter without wearing itself out. Every item below appears on Ford’s 2026 Super Duty specifications.
Snow Plow Prep Package
A factory option on the 2026 F-250 order sheet for trucks that will carry a plow. Confirm its contents on the specific truck’s window sticker or build sheet.
4x4 with shift-on-the-fly
Super Duty 4x4 trucks use electronic shift-on-the-fly, and auto/manual locking hubs are available. A Slippery drive mode is offered on both the gas and diesel trucks.
Upfitter switches
Six upfitter switches in the overhead console are available, giving plow lights, a strobe or a spreader a clean, factory-wired place to connect.
Alternator output
Plow hydraulics and lights draw heavy current. Alternator output depends on engine, so check the table below before ordering.
2026 Super Duty Alternator Options by Engine
| Engine | Alternator | Drive modes |
|---|---|---|
| 6.8L gas V8 | 160-amp standard; higher-output gas alternators available | Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul |
| 7.3L gas V8 | 250-amp standard; dual alternators totaling 410 amps available | Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul |
| 6.7L Power Stroke diesel | 190-amp standard; 250-amp or dual alternators totaling 410 amps available | Normal, Eco, Slippery, Tow/Haul |
For a dedicated plow truck, pair the plow’s electrical draw with the highest alternator output offered for your engine, and run lights through the upfitter switches rather than splicing into factory wiring.
How Front Axle Weight Rating Limits Plow Size
Front gross axle weight rating (FGAWR) is the maximum load the front axle, springs, wheels and tires are rated to carry. Federal rules require every truck to list a gross axle weight rating for each axle on its certification label, found on the driver’s door jamb (49 CFR 567.4).
A snow plow and its mount hang ahead of the front axle, so nearly all of their weight, and some leverage beyond it, lands on that axle. The rule for any plow truck: with the plow installed and raised, the front axle load must stay within the FGAWR on the door label. Three things eat into that margin:
- Engine weight. A diesel weighs more than a gas V8, so it uses more of the front axle rating before a plow goes on.
- Cab and options. A crew cab, winch or heavy front-end equipment adds front-axle load.
- The plow itself. Plow makers publish vehicle application guides listing which blades are approved for which trucks.
The right way to choose is to start with the plow you want to run, check the maker’s application guide, and then confirm the specific truck’s FGAWR on its door label.
Gas or Diesel Super Duty for Plowing?
Gas: 6.8L or 7.3L V8
Lighter over the front axle, which leaves more FGAWR margin for the blade. The 7.3L comes with a 250-amp alternator as standard, with dual alternators totaling 410 amps available. A sound choice for trucks that plow in winter and work light the rest of the year.
Diesel: 6.7L Power Stroke
More torque for pushing the heavy, wet snow coastal storms bring to the East End and for towing equipment trailers year-round. Riverhead Ford’s master diesel technicians service the Power Stroke.

Keep a Plow Truck Working All Season
- Before the first storm: check hydraulic fluid, plow lights and the battery and charging system.
- After each storm: rinse the salt and brine Suffolk County roads are treated with from the frame, plow mount and brake lines.
- Watch front-end wear. A plow adds load to ball joints, steering components and front springs, so have them inspected at each oil change during the season.
- Book plow-season maintenance with Riverhead Ford’s service department.

Where can I buy a Ford truck with a snow plow on Long Island?
Riverhead Ford, at 1419-23 Old Country Road in Riverhead, sells Ford Super Duty trucks set up for snow plows, alongside its wider commercial work truck inventory. Call or send a request with the plow you plan to run, and the commercial team can point you to trucks whose front axle rating suits it.
What is the Ford Snow Plow Prep Package?
The Snow Plow Prep Package is a factory option Ford lists on the 2026 F-250 Super Duty order sheet for trucks that will carry a plow. Check the window sticker or build sheet on a specific truck to see what the package includes.
Is an F-250 or F-350 better for plowing?
Either can plow. The deciding number is the front gross axle weight rating, or FGAWR, printed on each truck's door-jamb label. Compare that figure on the specific trucks you are considering against the installed weight of the plow, because cab, engine and options all change how much front-axle capacity is left for a blade.
Is a gas or diesel Super Duty better for a plow truck?
Both work. A diesel brings more torque, but its heavier engine uses more of the front axle rating before the plow goes on. A gas Super Duty leaves more front-axle margin for the blade and costs less to buy. For a truck that plows and also tows heavy trailers year-round, the diesel usually earns its premium.
Can any 4x4 pickup carry a snow plow?
No. A plow hangs its weight ahead of the front axle, so the truck needs a front gross axle weight rating, suspension and electrical system that can carry it. Plow manufacturers publish application guides that list approved trucks and blades, and the truck's own FGAWR must not be exceeded with the plow installed.
